Getting Back Into Fitness in Montclair After Time Off or Injury

By The Char Fitness Club team

Maybe it's been a few years. Maybe a new job, kids or an injury got in the way. Whatever the reason, walking back into a gym can feel like the hardest part. This guide is for anyone in Montclair who wants to start again, and wants to do it safely.

Coach guiding members through ring training at Char Fitness Club in Montclair, NJ

You don't need to get fit before you start

"Will I be able to keep up?" is one of the most common questions we get. You don't have to be in shape to join a class at Char. Our coaches guide new and returning members through a gradual, safe progression, and every class comes with modifications, so you can work at your level next to people who've been training for years.

If you have an injury, check in first

We always suggest talking to a healthcare professional about an injury before you start training. If you're cleared to move with modifications, you're welcome at Char. Coaches can modify movements to work around a nagging knee, shoulder or back.

How modifications work in a class

  • Small classes. Classes are capped at 12, so a coach can see what you're doing and suggest a change.

  • Options, not spotlight. Easier and harder versions are offered as a normal part of class.

  • Form over speed. Movements are structured and easy to scale, and good form comes first.

  • No barbells in our HIIT workouts. Conditioning stays adjustable rather than technical.

A sensible way to restart

  • Tell your coach before class about any injury, recent surgery or pregnancy, and anything that hurts on the day.

  • Mix in recovery. Our Stretch class is guided mobility and flexibility work, and it's a gentle way back in alongside Strength or The Trilogy.

  • Build up to 3–4 sessions a week. That's what we recommend for most people, but it depends on you. Start where you can stay consistent.

  • Expect to be sore, not hurt. If something feels wrong, stop and tell the coach.

Prefer more one-on-one attention?

If you'd rather start with a coach to yourself, Char also offers 1:1 personal training, and semi-private sessions where you train alongside a friend or partner. Both are booked through Mindbody.
